Virtual Thanks

This year I am most grateful for all the friends I have met through the internet. As unlikely a method as it is, I love that there are so many interesting people I would never have the chance to become friends with if we were restricted to mere spatial proximity. It's a large, large world and anything which can connect people in so many ways is something worth cherishing.

Most surprising to me is the wide of variety of people I have met. Rather than just finding shodows om my own interests and tastes, I have met people with an infinite variety of backgrounds and perspectives. I want to thank each and every one of you for enriching my life and broadening my horizon.

Happy Thanksgiving to you. And two more words: Go Dawgs!

Happy Thanksgiving! I often think of you in relation to my ambivalent feelings towards internet social contacts. I fear they are overly shallow and sometimes I think we are demeaning the very concept of friendship by elevating our imaginary friends to that status. But I see how you are so enthusiastic about it and that helps to convince me there is actually something there.

I sometimes think of the process of internet socializing as colonizing parts of other people's brains. You have certainly claimed a section of my gray matter; I'm not likely to forget you and I think it's quite probable that we will meet someday. (How about next year at the Miami Book Fair, if Joel shows up? Could be a boodlefest!)
