Teenage Girl President Casting Call

Francesco “Ces” Marciuliano, in addition to being the second string replacement current writer for the comic strip Sally Forth (featuring my hero, Ted Forth) also writes a webcomic called Medium Large. One the most popular features of Medium Large is the Monday episodes of Teenage Girl President. This television show within a comic strip chronicles the events in the life of a typical blonde teenager who inexplicably is also the President of the United States. As high-concept, it is brilliant and it’s only a matter of time before a real network like CW, Nickelodeon or Disney rips off this idea.

As the Washington Post explains in their article titled Marketers Tune In to the Tween Set a lot of programming aimed at the middle-school aged crowd is completely off the radar screen of anyone not still carrying lunch money to class. These shows feature cute kids wisecracking their way through the trials and tribulations of adolescence. Clarissa Explains It All was the pioneer in this genre and Hillary Duff rode Lizzie McGuire to stardom.

Viewing tastes skew in a way that kids like to watch shows about other kids their own age or just slightly older. High School Musical is huge with middle-schoolers, but musically minded high school students prefer Rent. Teenage Girl President:The Series would be just perfect for this tweener audience. Picking the right star is essential. I'm sure Hillary Duff is way too big for CW, and Haylie may be too old for the part.

Here are some of my suggestions for someone looking to cast TGP:

Jamie Lynn Spears, the star of Zoey 101, is about the right age and maybe she could get big sister Britney to do the theme song.

Aly and AJ are better known as a singing sister act, but they have both done acting. Either one could play the part of TGP, and the other could be the sister or the back-stabbing vice-president.

Ashley Tisdale is the bad-girl on The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, but she might want to be a big star in the White House.

Emma Roberts, Julia’s niece, has been doing movies, but a steady starring TV role could be an enticing career builder. She'd have to bleach her hair though.

Vanessa Ann Hudgens would also need some highlights, but the star of High School Musical is on a hot streak and could definitely run for higher office.

Amanda Bynes had her show canceled. She’s a proven star with great comedy chops. Sign her up quick.

And for the TGP Chief of Staff, there is only one choice.
Alan Ruck.

Let me know which of these actresses deserve a role as the Leader Of The Free World And Queen Bee Of The Cafeteria. And if you've never heard of any of them, get a thirteen year-old to help you out.

Update (7/25/07): Many, many people (mostly teenage and younger girls) have found this post by googling something including "casting call" and have mistaken it for a real call for applications. I have no intention of ever meeting Chris Hansen in person or having to explain this post to the notoriously humor impaired FBI, so I have erased all comments with personally identifiable information. If you need examples of why I had to do that, visit my Comment Casting Couch post.

Wow, Yello, the amount of google image search time it must have taken to get the pics to match up so well with the panels is ... impressive. No, wait, do I mean "disturbing"? Nah, I'm going to stick with "impressive". It's close to the line though.

Thanks for the compliment. I tried to stay just this side of getting hit with a restraining order.

I'm only familiar with two of them. Amanda Bynes definitely has my vote (though that amight not be totally fair to the others I know nothing about).

Amanda Bynes would be best...I think Jamie Lynn and Emma Roberts are too young for the part.

Very impressive photo/TGP panel juxtaposition.

No, I'm not a spammer, just showing true appreciation for your work. Worth at least two Roast Pork Italians.

In the future, please try to avoid sentences beginning "Hilary Duff rode..." I'm in enough trouble as it is.

They are all pretty enticing, or will be when they reach majority. Until then, I have no opinion about those who are underage. For the legal ones, I would not throw any one of them out of bed for eating crackers. Not a one. ... Well, at least not until morning, or unless Angelina Jolie showed up.

Oh wait, you were just looking for an opinion on how suitable they would be for TGP. Er... um... I'll go with whatever the faceless hordes decide. Any one of 'em will do. They all look kinda similar to me anyway...

And yes, Alan Ruck. He's adorable.

Doesn't Emma Roberts already so some Nickelodeon series? She looks familiar. And I think Amanda Bynes is getting too old for the part. I'd go with, and it pains me to say it, Jamie Lynn Spears. But only if Brit has NOTHING to do with it...

Impetua, I'm shocked at you! Tween shows are always squeaky clean. You have to go to The N (Nickelodeon's older sibling) for shows slightly more realistic about what teenagers really do. Check out South of Nowhere's "Spencer and Ashley" storyline.

Sorry, wish I could help you out here but I got nothin. Post this again in three years when my daughter is 13 and I'll ask her then. Of course you'll need a whole new set of candidates, but that's ok too.

I've been in love with Alan Ruck since Ferris Beuller's Day Off. Excellent choice!!

The girls, eh. They all really look the same to me.

Emphasis on "slightly". I remember watching Daria reruns that were heavily edited to remove innuendos in some cases, despite airing at like 11:30pm.

Also, anything that gives more exposure to Amanda Bynes gets my approval.

What? WHAT?? Clarissa Explains It All was great, but I do believe Degrassi Junior High was the first of these shows....and it was pure Canadian bliss

Vyolynce said...

According to IMDb, Degrassi Junior High did indeed have a 4-year jump on Clarissa.

yellojkt said...

Degrassi is more of an ensemble piece. Clarissa focuses more on a single heroine. Plus it was American made. Not that should matter.

I would vote for Prussian Blue over Aly and AJ, but then I've been a big fan of theirs ever since I saw the quote from their mom in the Guardian justifying naming her child Dresden. "Dresden's a name… What about Paris? Paris Hilton?" It reminded me of Homer Simpson saying "Purple's a fruit" -- an awful, racist Homer Simpson.

Yeah, given this field you may have to go with Jamie-Lynn Spears.

Alan Ruck is a very good choice, but didn't he play a similar role on Spin City? He may not want to be typecast.

My 12 yr old daughter loves the new DiGrassi. Her dad and I loved the original and we were grownups then (at least we looked the part).

I knew it was a good show for her to watch when I joined her one evening and she said, matter-of-factly, "This is the one where she finds out her dad is gay."

Must-see TV.

Oh yeah.. Miley Cyrus. She can steal some Secret Service agent's achey breaky heart.

yellojkt said...

Our first write-in candidate. Miley Cyrus from Hannah Montana. At 13, Miley needs to log a few years as Tweener Girl Senator before running for the top seat.

Billy Ray proves there is life after being a country music laughing
stock.

And "Drive" didn't get picked up by Fox, so I don't think Alan Ruck is in any position to turn down work.

How 'bout my daughter, Hannah? We can start grooming her now, so she'll be ready by the time she's 13.

When acting agents ensure that your headshots are sent to these production companies, and the production company knows that you are represented by a certain talent agency, your likelihood of being invited to acting audition increases.
